Mora lies in the heart of Dalarna on the shores of the beautiful lake Siljan. Here old traditions meet new ideas in an exciting way. This historical ground was trodden by both Gustav Vasa and Anders Zorn. The world-famous Dalahästen wooden horses are made just to the south of Mora. Even Father Christmas lives just outside Mora. The town is also known for the Vasaloppet ski race’s finishing line, for the useful Mora knife and for being home to one of the leading manufacturers of water taps in the Nordic region. |
A place with charm Not far from Mora station stands Vasaloppet museum, which shows the history of the Vasaloppet ski race and the other contests during Vasalopps-week. Mora centre has a large variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. Here you will also fi nd Zorn museum and Zorn farm, which display the world famous artist’s home and many of his works. If the weather allows, you can enjoy a dip in lake Siljan’s clear waters. Not far from the station lies Tingsnäsbadet, a lovely, large sandy beach, just a stone’s throw from the track and near ice cream and cafes. |
Strong, famous symbols Mora and the other villages around Siljan are well-known for having preserved and continued to use traditional costumes. The costume tradition is widespread and it is usual to wear one’s costume at graduations, mid-summer festivals, weddings and other special occasions throughout the year. Another cultural expression is the classic Dalahästen wooden horses. These were made in various villages near Mora and are still being made, more or less by hand, in Färnäs and Nusnäs just south of Mora. |
The Zorn’s family homeZorngården is a gem showing how husband and wife, Anders and Emma Zorn, lived. The house remains mainly untouched since Zorn’s time and is a fantastic example of cultural history. The Vasaloppet ski race’s finishing line is another famous site in Mora. About 45,000 skiers who participate in some of the Vasalopp week’s ski races, from Tjejvasan to the great Vasaloppet itself, glide over the finishing line under the motto “In the footsteps of our forefathers for the victories of tomorrow”.
