There are lots of opportunities to do something extra special in Östersund and on the island of Frösön. Situated on the shores of Lake Storsjön with the mountains in the distance you can understand why this magnificent area has been a gathering place for thousands of years. You can wander through the charming city centre and marvel at the variety of cafes, restaurants and shops selling everything from handicrafts to Jämtland delicacies. Those of us who live here enjoy life and would like our guests to do the same. Maybe you could call in during the largest city music festival in Sweden – Storsjöyran – 23 July–1 August.

Frösön – a sparkling gem in Lake Storsjön
Frösön is a cultural goldmine. From the tower Frösötornet you have magnificent views of a large part of Jämtland. Make sure you see Frösö church and pop into the cafe in the old captain’s house Stocke Titt for a light snack. Sommarhagen, the beautifully designed home of the composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger, is nearby and there are guided tours of the house. There are open-air performances of the Viking play Arnljotspelen every year with the lake and the Oviksfjällen mountains as the backdrop. Don’t miss Frösö Zoo, the most visited tourist attraction in Jämtland.

Your own adventure
You will be within walking distance of most places, or you can use local buses or hire a bike from the tourist information office, at the ski stadium or in the park Badhusparken in the harbour. Go for a trip on S/S Thomée, the oldest steamship in Sweden still operating a regular service. If you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of the Storsjö Monster during your boat trip. For swimming there is the recently refurbished Storsjöbadet swimming and leisure complex or the Lövstabadet pool. You could also visit the activity centre Multi Challenge with the Boda Borg centre, climbing wall and go-karting. The youngest children, from 0–12 years, have their own adventure world at Djungelhuset. Färgfabriken is both a new centre for the arts and a laboratory of the contemporary.

Excursions in time and space
At Jamtli history is brought to life so that you have fun and enjoy your visit. You can visit farms from the 18th and 19th centuries in the large open-air section. Actors inside the houses and the 1956 garage recreate bygone eras. You can go time travelling, visiting farms and other exhibits. There are lots of exciting exhibitions inside the museum, as well as a café and shop. You should visit the Geohuset centre in Ångsta near the Lockne crater where you can experience the impact of a meteorite falling to earth around 455 million years ago in a mini-cosmonova. If you want to meet and stroke real, live moose then you should visit Moose Garden in Orrviken, guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience.
