Magical places VIlhelmina church town is well worth a visit. This quaint area of town, dating from 1792, with old timber church cottages is in the centre of town by the church. The area was original used by people coming from country villages for church festivals. Today the 27 remaining cottages are used as shops, Sami galleries and accommodation. Further to the north, you will find Fatmomakke, the old Sami place of worship, which is now a unique area with around 80 Sami cot tents and 20 wooden church cottages on the shores of lake Kultsjön. This location has been a Sami meeting place since the end of the 18th century and is still in use today. The church is open during the summer months. There is also a popular cultural display. |
A centre with a rich heritage In Vilhelmina, the Folkets Hus centre has fun activities for all ages, including a cinema, swimming pool, bowling alley and library. The library also has a unique Sami section and internet access. Vilhelmina’s local museum is in the parish hall in the church town district from the 19th century. The museum has the Maksjöfyndet burial find from the 8th century and a ski from the 4th century. The centre of the town has a good range of restaurants and snack bars, for example Hotell Wilhelmina, Lilla hotellet, Krogen and Folkets hus. |
| Super excursions The mountains are full of beautiful and interesting places to visit. So make sure you find the time for some excursions into the wild. Places that we can especially recommend include: the Trappstegsforsen waterfall – a stepped waterfall where the waters of Lake Kultsjön run out into Djupselet. Photographs of the waterfall are highly valued by guests when they return home. Ricklundgården in Saxnäs is an interesting artist’s villa built in the 1940s. For those who enjoy hiking, Marsfjället, at 1,589 metres above sea level the highest point in Vilhelmina, is nearby. There are hiking trails from Fatomakke and Marsliden. There is also a great mountain hike that takes you to Klitvallen between Dikanäs, Matsdal and Grönfjäll. There are fairy-tale trails for families in Dikanäs and Kittelfjäll. Remains from between 4000 and 2000 BC have been found near the outflow for the river Gråtanån. Dikanäs is also where you can find Sweden’s northernmost motorcycle museum, which is well worth a visit.
