INLANDSBANAN – A railway journey through Swedish history
An illustrated description of the line’s stations and surroundings! This 80-page book has been written by two railway experts, based on their own research: Katarina Sandberg of the Swedish Railway Museum and Harald Sundlin of the Swedish National Heritage Board.
The book describes in words and pictures the stations, bridges, roundhouses and many other points of interest between Mora and Gällivare, making it a fascinating read for anyone with an interest in Inlandsbanan.
The stories about Inlandsbanan, Sweden’s last major railway project, live on: the myths, hopes and dreams. In fact, Inlandsbanan is still capable of arousing powerful emotions. When it was threatened with closure in 1992, the strength of public opinion resulted in the municipalities along the line establishing the company Inlandsbanan AB, which started to build up the freight and tourist services on the line. The company is still going strong today.
Apart from the scheduled services during the summer, it has also started operating charter services, and is modernising its locomotives and carriages. Additional funding is now being sought to continue upgrading the line. Inlandsbanan’s cultural history is retained in almost perfectly preserved station buildings and technical installations from the 1940s and 50s, which hark back to the days of steam trains and railcars.
This book can guide you through that cultural history before your journey!
